Phillips Exeter Academy, a co-educational residential school serving students in grades 9 through 12, and post-graduate level, was founded in 1781 by John Phillips. The Position
Reporting to the Chair, this position is responsible for the overall operation and development of the design lab. The design lab provides space and the tools to facilitate student project development and incorporates modern technological tools such as a laser cutter and 3d printers along with a number of power tools. Key accountabilities include:
• Maintains a schedule of times when the lab will be open for individual project work and for classes.
• Maintains a safe, organized, and clean lab space.
• Supervises the lab during open hours.
• Coordinates workshops to ensure that students can learn about and gain experience with various design methods, design equipment, and safety practices. Workshops may be offered by the design lab coordinator, students, faculty, staff, and community members.
• Identifies and purchases equipment and supplies that will support the design lab’s mission.
• Maintains a design lab budget.
• Coordinates timely maintenance of equipment.
• Consults with individual students on projects.
• Develops, in conjunction with faculty input, a long-term vision for the design lab.
• Establishes and runs a program where students may become design lab proctors.
• Develops connections with other maker communities.

Part-time position, approximately 22 hours per week. Academic year. Does not work the weeks preceding/following terms. Will require some evening and weekend work. Schedule may vary according to departmental and Academy needs.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will have an undergraduate degree in a STEM-related field or an undergraduate degree along with experience in a makerspace or design environment.

The ideal candidate will have:

• Experience in a makerspace is desirable.
• Experience with design of physical objects is desirable.
• Experience with overseeing developing a long-term vision is desirable.
• Experience with some of the significant areas within the design lab: electronics, microcontrollers such as Arduinos, laser cutting, 3d printing, basic woodworking tools (drill press, band saw, various hand-held power tools.
• Works very well with high school students.
• Engaging.
• Excited to learn; shows ability to learn individually; takes initiative to be up on what others are doing in maker spaces (tools, software).
• Knowledge of complex maker space techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substance.
• Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
• Proficiency in basic data management systems and basic computer applications (e.g., AutoCAD, Illustrator, Simplify3d, Sketchup, etc.).
• Willingness and ability to learn additional applications as needed.
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to organize and maintain a clean laboratory, to keep an accurate inventory, and to order supplies.
• Ability to prioritize work and advance multiple projects simultaneously.
